Lusaka โ 16th June, 2025 โ The Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) announces the official unveiling of its sixth Board of Directors by the Honourable Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu. The new Board will serve a three-year term effective June 2025.
Appointed under Section 11 of the Water Resources Management Act No. 21 of 2011, the Boardโs selection followed a transparent and consultative process. In his remarks, the Minister underscored the urgent need to strengthen enforcement of water regulations, curb pollution of water bodies, declare critical areas as Water Resources Protection Zones, streamline the permit issuance process, and implement the Water Harvesting and Storage Regulations. He urged the Board to provide strategic direction and lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability in fulfilling WARMAโs regulatory mandate.
The newly appointed sixth WARMA Board of Directors comprises of Dr. John E. L. Kunda as Board Chairperson, Ms. Chilekwa Christabel Mibenge, Eng. Wesley Lwiindi, Chieftainess Muwezwa (Rhoda Muweza), Ms. Antonia Chisanga, Mr. Edson Nkonde, Mr. Alex L. Kabwe, Ms. Lynn M. B. Syanziba, and Mr. Joseph Jimu Daka.
The Board members bring a wealth of experience in water resource management, engineering, environmental protection, law, and governance. Their collective expertise is expected to strengthen WARMAโs role in promoting sustainable water management and driving the Authorityโs long-term strategic goals.
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Chairperson Dr. John Kunda acknowledged the realities of climate change and highlighted the urgent need to build national resilience through investment in water harvesting, storage infrastructure, and groundwater recharge. He emphasized that Zambia cannot afford continued water losses due to inadequate conservation and storage capacity.
Dr. Kunda also announced the Boardโs commitment to reducing the water permit processing period to one month by enhancing internal systems, digitalizing operations, and improving service delivery. He reaffirmed the Boardโs focus on inclusive development, institutional integrity, and ensuring that water contributes meaningfully to national economic growth and improved livelihoods.
The Board pledged to collaborate closely with Government, stakeholders, and communities to protect and manage Zambiaโs water resources in line with the national vision and the provisions of the Water Resources Management Act.
The management and entire staff of WARMA warmly congratulate the sixth Board of Directors on their appointment and look forward to their strategic direction and visionary leadership in advancing the Authorityโs mandate and ensuring water security for all.
