The Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) held a session at the ongoing 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) 2026 under the theme “Water Resources Management: Strengthening Evidence-Based Water Resources Management.”
As Zambia faces increasing pressure on its water resources from climate change, population growth, urbanization, and industrial development, the need for evidence-based management has become more critical than ever.
The session brought together stakeholders from government, academia, the private sector, civil society, and development partners, to discuss how research, data, and innovation can support sustainable water governance and strengthen water security across the country.
During the session, the Authority highlighted its commitment to using scientific evidence and modern technology to improve the management, protection, and regulation of water resources.
Presentations showcased innovative approaches like drone technology, which is currently enhancing water resource monitoring, environmental assessments, and compliance enforcement.
WARMA experts also shared critical research findings. A presentation on the Kalahari Aquifer System provided valuable insights into groundwater recharge and sustainability, while another examined lessons learned from water quality recovery following the Sino-Metals tailings dam failure, underscoring the vital importance of effective environmental monitoring and response mechanisms.
Participants also explored how to integrate water resource security into urban development planning, using a case study of Kapiri Mposhi, they demonstrated how hydrological and hydrogeological considerations can successfully support sustainable infrastructure development.
Through interactive discussions and knowledge sharing, stakeholders emphasized that collaboration, robust policy implementation, compliance, and community participation are essential to addressing emerging challenges such as pollution, encroachment, and climate change.
The session reaffirmed WARMA’s commitment to strengthening evidence-based decision-making and fostering partnerships for sustainable water management.
